do you know of any free anne movie clips online?
There are quite a few clips that people have put on Youtube. I didn't upload
them, but I've created playlists
of some Anne movie clips.
You needn't answer this question if you only answer 'Anne'
questions. I just finished "Emily Climbs" and in one of the last
chapters
there is a reference to Charlotte Bronte, whom 'Emily' credits with
posessing genius. Don't go to any great trouble to answer this question if
you don't wish to, But, did LMM ever say anything else about this author
or her works? Or just any other author who she obviously admired?
Thanks alot!
I found this link to some quotations from Montgomery on Charlotte Bronte, and apparently, Montgomery did say quite alot about Bronte:
"Charlotte Bronte only made about 7,000 by her books ... It seems unfair and unjust. What I admire most in Charlotte Bronte is her absolute clear-sightedness regarding shams and sentimentalities. Nothing of the sort could impose on her. And she always hewed straight to the line. I have been asking myself, 'If I had known Charlotte Bronte in life - how would we have reacted upon each other? Would I have liked her? Would she have liked me?' I answer, 'No.' She was absolutely without a sense of humor. She would not have approved of me at all. I could have done her whole heaps of good. A few jokes would have leavened the gloom and tragedy of that Haworth Parsonage amazingly.
People have spoken of Charlotte Bronte's 'creative genius'. Charlotte Bronte had no creative genius. Her genius was one of amazing ability to describe and interpret the people and surroundings she knew. All the people in her books who impress us with such a wonderful sense of reality were drawn from life. She herself is Jane Eyre, Lucy Snowe. Emily was Shirley. Rochester, whom she did create, was unnatural and unreal. Blanche Ingram was unreal. St. John was unreal. Most of her men are unreal. She knew nothing of men except her father and brother and the Belgian professor of her intense unhappy love. Emmanuel was drawn from him, and therefore is one of the few men in her books who is real."
Montgomery even mentions "Benson cannot understand a proud sensitive woman's heart. I love Charlotte Bronte so much that I am angry when anyone tries to belittle her," in regards to Ef Benson's "Charlotte Bronte". You can see the other quotes at The Sheila Variations.
What is the actor's name who played Charlie Sloane in 1985 version of AGG? IMDB did not have his character or name listed, even as an uncredited actor.
Yes, imdb doesn't have the actor listed and I looked over the credits for the film but they didn't have his name there either.

Sloane was said to be engaged." In Anne
of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000) (TV), Josie is with Moody Spurgeon, but that is different from the actual
book series.
Who played Josie Pye in the original London cast?
I tried really hard to look for information (Anne of Green Gables, Original

What were Gilbert's parents' names? Did he have any brothers or sisters?
Gilbert Blythe's dad was John Blythe and his mother's name was never mentioned.
He didn't have any siblings. You can read more about him here.
Was Gilbert dead at the last book of the Anne series? And since im a gilbert-anne
die hard fan are there anymore books after Anne of the Island that's focuses
on them. Coz im only up to the third book and if there's no future Gil/Anne
plot then i wouldnt bother that much.
If you want the spoilers, no, Gilbert doesn't die, and Gilbert and Anne are a
couple throughout the entire series. You should definitely read, in order
or
else they
won't make
sense, Anne's
House of Dreams and Anne of Ingleside because
they focus quite a bit on their relationship. The later books focus heavily on
their kids.
Yo this is a fantastic site. I was just wondering, do any of the Ann series
(from Green Gables-Further Chronicles of Avonlea) have illustrations? is
there any publishing house that has copies that are published, that you know
of? thanks and hope you know!!!
I did a mini research and found several books have illustrations, and some
are
extremely rare a) The Page Company, Boston (1920) has a frontispiece
of
Mary Miles Minter
as Anne b) L. C. Page & Company, Boston (1934) has a frontispiece of Anne
and Diana
c) The
Annotated Anne of Green Gables has many illustrations d) This version has
"12 full-colour plates" by Laura Fernandez and Rick Jacobson although the review
on that website isn't great e) pictures from Further
Chronicles of Avonlea (scroll
to the bottom of the page and you'll see links) f) This website has many pictures
from the antique
versions of the books. From doing this research, two names came up: George
Gibbs and M.L. Kirk. The two seem to have done many illustrations for the old
versions. As for the most accessible copies, I think c) and d) are the two that
are the easiest to find. For the other books in the series, I haven't found
any
that have illustrated copies yet, apart from the antique versions. If I find
any,
I'll post them here.
I thought ann shirley was a child star. wasn't she married to john payne.
That is true, but that is Anne
Shirley, a.k.a. Dawn Evelyn Paris, the actress. O'Day starred as Anne Shirley
in the 1934 adaptation of the series, and after
that film, O'Day took the stage name 'Anne Shirley'. The series the film was
based on is on the fictional character, Anne Shirley,
created by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
This is not an Anne question. LMM was always writing about Presbytyrian
versus Methodist. (I'm Canadian, so should know) so I'm wondering if there
really was a lot of rivalry between them during her time. And, what was she?
Thanks
Lucy was married to Ewan MacDonald, a Presbyterian minister.
In 1925, the Methodists merged with the Presbyterians, "then the largest Protestant
communion in Canada", along with other churches, to form the United Church of
Canada (source).
However, "A sizable minority of Canadian Presbyterians, primarily in southern
Ontario but also throughout the entire nation, withdrew, and reconstituted themselves
as a non-concurring continuing Presbyterian body." (source).
Lucy's husband was the minister of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in
Leaskdale, part of Uxbridge Township, Ontario Canada. Under Rev. Ewan Macdonald,
from 1910-1926, their congregation voted against joining with Methodists and
congregationalists to form the United Church of Canada (source).
this is not exactly a question, but I would like for your
printable calendar pages if you could do more pictures from the movies, like
you did in January and February of 2007!
I used some stills from two Anne films for the September and October 2007 calendars.
Enjoy!
Hi, i absolutely love your website, well done!!!it must have taken u ages! do you personally believe that ann of green gables was a canadian icon?
Thanks :D Yes, it can take a while. I think Anne Shirley is definitley a Canadian
icon. Her image is known throughout the world, and since the series is set
in Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, thousands of people visit the province
just to see the house. You can find Anne Shirley dolls across Canada (I even
saw them in B.C.)!
Hi! Your website is super, congratulations! I would like to give some
informations about Davy's children. In Chapter III., Rainbov Valley LMM said:
'A visit to
Green Gables was always considered a great treat. [...] There were jolly playmates
there, too"Uncle" Davy's children and "Aunt" Diana's children.'
So Davy _had_ children. Zsófi from Hungary
Thanks a bunch for the information! This is in reference to one of the the questions
on this page.
what were some specific quotes from anne in the book
I've posted some quotes for each book. I am working
on expanding each of the book pages with more informationand quotes will be one
of the categories added on. If you'd like more quotes, you can find them at Litquotes.com.
Did the medical procedure performed on Dick/George Moore exist?
"I took the opportunity to examine the scars on his head thoroughly.
I've always thought Dick was a very interesting case from a medical point
of
view. Lately I've been studying the history of trephining and the
cases where it has been employed. Anne, I have come to the conclusion that
if
Dick Moore were taken to a good hospital and the operation of trephining
performed on several places in his skull, his memory and faculties
might be restored," Chapter 29, Anne's House
of Dreams.
The method Gilbert used to 'cure' George Moore is called 'trephining'.
It is surgery in which "a hole is drilled or scraped into the
skull, thus exposing the dura mater in order to treat health problems
[...] Evidence of trepanation has been found in prehistoric human
remains from
Neolithic times onwards, per cave paintings indicating that
people believed the practice would cure epileptic seizures,
migraines, and mental disorders." I don't know what they would
have done to George Moore after they drilled the hole into his head,
but that technique definitely existed during the time. Debates
about the actual effectiveness of this procedure and further details
can be found at
Wikipedia.org.
Why dont you write summaries of the books or other wesites that
have the summmaries?
I've written summaries for ALL the books. If you click on 'Books' on the navigation bar
above, you'll see a page with links to all the books and more, including settings and a list of characters
I've started.
If you're interested in other Anne websites, click on 'Site' on the navigation bar above
and scroll down until you see it says 'Links'.
Why did the story timeline change between books? In Anne of Green Gables
it's obviously set in the 1890's because of sleeve fashion. But later
in the series Anne is busy having children in the 1890's.
Using calculations, Anne Shirley arrived at Green Gables in the 1870s,
but Montgomery incorporated many descriptions of society
during the late 1890s-early 1900s, which probably caused the confusion. This is the reason why she had children
in the 1890s (which is correct).
How can someone (such as me) help out the site? Are there any really good
ways, not money-related?
I'm SO glad you asked :) There are many ways you can help that's not money-related.

Hi! I must tell you I love your site. You can find loads of things related to Anne so it's fantastic!! I adore Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie in the series but I didn't know there were other series with other actors or is the same serie?? Anyway Thank you for the page!
Hello, I'm glad you like the site :D Are you asking about the Anne films?
Yes, there are other adaptations on Anne
of Green Gables with other actors and companies. Megan Follows and
Jonathan Crombie starred in Anne of Green Gables (1985),
like the other versions before. The films produced in 1987, 2000,
Anne of Windy Poplars (1940) and Anne
of Avonlea (1975) are
unlike the other adaptations for they go beyond the first book. All the films
are based on the same Anne series.
I was wondering why you don't include news about the musical Anne and Gilbert. It is produced in Canada and very popular I was listening to the songs on their website and plan to see it in Ontario this year - check out www.anneandgilbert.com
This site is continuously expanding as I research for information in my spare
time.
Don't be alarmed if you don't find everything related to Anne on this website
yet.
It is
a
work in
progress :0) I'd be glad to add this musical on this website when I have the
time
to do it.
Hey, I love our site! it's awsome! A lot of people I know
don't enjoy Anne, but I love her. I'm gald you made this site. I
heard that you were makeing Anne layouts. Is that true? I have a
friend who has a myspace, and wants an Anne layout. It would be really
cool if u make one. I haven't been able to find any anywhere else
I'm currently creating a layout for this website and I create Anne
website layouts available for downloading. I don't have any layouts for Myspace
right now, or for any of those blogging sites. If I do create one, I'll post
it here :0)
What will happen in the book Rilla of the Ingleside
Here's a brief summary of the book, but
you'd probably enjoy reading the book more.
Hi, I love your site. It is amazing and such a fitting tribute
to such a beautiful character. In the film 'Anne of Green Gables'
(1985), Marilla says something to Anne. She says that Anne said to
her that everyday is a new day with no mistakes. I was just wondering,
was this in the book and if so, what the exact quote is? Thank you
very much for taking the time to read this :)
I'm glad you love the site :0) The quote is by Anne, and it is from Anne
of Green Gables, Chapter 21, "Marilla, isn't it nice to think that tomorrow
is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?".
I really am enjoy the Anne series. A lot of my friends HATE
it. Why do you think this is true?
What are their ages? If they're young, they probably don't think it's cool
to read books about a little girl, or to even read books for that matter! It
could also be that they don't have the patience to read through the English,
since
it's
slightly different compared to how people write today.
1. Was Marilla married to Matthew or not? I thought they were.
2.What times
are the books set in? Victorian?
3.CAn you tell me the order and names of all the books. I am up to Anne Of Ingleside!
1) Marilla was Matthew's sister. 2) The books were set in the late Victorian
age and the Edwardian age. 3) The list of books can
be found here.
There are more than a few mentions of politics in the books --
Anne's a Conservative, Mrs. Lynde is a Liberal, and there are Tories,
too. What do those labels mean in the context of Victorian-era Canada?
Those labels are still used today. The Conservatives are the Tories, and the
Liberals are the Grits. I'm not familiar with Victorian Canada politics, but
there is some background information about the political history of Canada
at Wikipedia.
There are lists of current and past political parties, as well as election
results dating back to the late 1800s.
Are there any interviews/writings of LMM specifically about the
Anne series? I would like to know more about why the books are written
in their order, how she chose her plots/characters, etc.
There is a collection of LMM's journals, in which she documented not only her
life, but also the writing process of her novels. Her journals can be found
at Amazon,
or possibly in a local library. There are also two interviews with LMM about
the movies based on her books (Anne of Green Gables
(1919) and Anne of Green Gables (1934).
How did anne's honesty impact society and what are some examples
of her honesty?
Anne is very outgoing and opinionated. When she first arrives at Green Gables,
she speaks her mind at her free will. Anne lived in an era where children were
to be seen and not heard, and so her elders were horrified with her continuous
ramblings and fiery outbursts (e.g. her scathing yet correct accusations of
the impossible Rachel Lynde). She provides a chuckle or two for others who
are afraid to speak their minds, and she solidifies her distinct personality
simultaneously. After the first book, her temper begins to settle down. However,
she stays true to her character for she does not assume another personality
to please others. The children around her are the most aware of her honesty.
They adore her and view her as a guardian (e.g. her pupils, Elizabeth, the
Merediths).
How much older is Kenneth Ford then Rilla Blythe?
Kenneth Ford (around 1893) was about 6 years older than Rilla Blythe (1899).
does anne marry gilbert
Yes, Anne Shirley and Gilbert
Blythe marry in the series.
Do you know the name of Stella's son ? In RiI (Rilla in Ingleside) you
can read, that he had gone to the
soldiers. And what do you know about his father ?
For Stella Maynard, it is known that she lived in Vancouver and that
her son enlisted to go to war, but I can't find any information about
his name or his father. If anybody knows, please let me know and I'll
post it.
what happened to bbc kim braden anne of green gables? she fit
anne in the novel better than megan
Kim starred in Anne of Avonlea (1975) following Anne
of Green Gables (1972).
She continued to star in TV shows, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation (1990),
Murder, She Wrote, and Star Trek: Generations (1994) the film. You can
find a bit more information about her here.
why is Anne of Green Gables considered classic literature.
At Wikipedia.org,
the compiled definition of classical (children's) literature is: "[...]
books which are selected and read by children themselves, as well as
those vetted as 'appropriate for
children' by authorities, e.g. teachers, reviewers, scholars, parents,
publishers, librarians, bookstores, and award committees."
When I hear the term, I think of books that are read by children generation
after generation, books that both children and parents have read. The
book may sometimes be widely known around the world too. I think Anne
of Green Gables fits those definitions.
The second picture at the top of the page, is that Royal Gardner
or Gilbert Blythe that Anne is kissing? As far as I know, Roy Gardner
never appeared in any of the Anne films to date.
That picture is from the movie Anne
of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000) (TV) and it is Gilbert
who is kissing Anne. As far as I know, Roy Gardner never appeared in
any of the Anne films up to date.
jezeli znasz polski to napiszw jaki sposob i gdzie sciagnac
muzyke o ani shirley (Poland)
Sorry, I don't understand what you are asking. I tried using
a Polish translator, if this is indeed Polish, and it did not work.
However, I did get a bit about the music. Are you asking about where
the music is from? The music I have in the radioblog is from my CD
copy of Anne of Green Gables Soundtrack.
If anyone can further translate this question into English, please do!
who was Marilla in the story?
Marilla, along with her brother Matthew, were the two people who took Anne
into their home when she was an orphan. Unless you mean the actress who portrayed
Marilla in the more well-known film adaptations by Sullivan Entertainment
of the Anne series, it was Colleen
Dewhurst who had the role.
What happened to Dora Keith after book 5?
""Really, Gilbert, we must be getting on in years," said Anne,
with a half-rueful smile, "when children who were six when we thought ourselves
grown up are old enough now to have beaux. Dora's is Ralph Andrews--Jane's brother.
I remember him as a little, round, fat, white-headed fellow who was always at
the foot of his class. But I understand he is quite a fine-looking young man
now,"" Anne's House of Dreams, Chapter
36. Dora probably did marry him.
What years Did the story take
If you calculate backwards from Rilla
of Ingleside, you will find that
Anne arrived at Green Gables around 1876, which is when the
story starts. Since the series end when WWI is over, the series stretch
from 1876 to late 1918.
Who is the lady who played Diana? Also, what is she currently
doing? Or has she disappeared from the whole TV stuff to live a normal
life?
In the Sullivan Entertainment adaptations, Schuyler
Grant portrayed Diana. There isn't much information about her, except
that she is in Brooklyn, New York and works in New York City. She was
also a part of the Kula Yoga Project in 2002. I don't know if she has
been in any recent theatre productions, but she hasn't been in any recent
films or tv shows.
What are Anne and Gilbert's children's name?
Joyce, James
Matthew 'Jem', Anne 'Nan', Diana 'Di', Walter Cuthbert, Shirley, Bertha
Marilla 'Rilla'. The profiles of some of the characters are here,
you can find out more information about them.
is there gonna be more anne of green gables the antimated
series?
Anne Toon, which aired on PBS Kids, is no longer airing I believe. The website
at PBSKids.org has
been pulled. I know that Sullivan
Entertainment has 3 DVDs/VHS available for
the show, six episodes in total: Babysitter Blues & One True Friend,
Sleeves & Butterflies, Avonlea Herald & Oh Brother. I'm pretty sure there were
more than just six episodes for the show, but as for new episodes, I don't know.
I never saw the show actually. I have the PBS channel but they never aired Anne
Toon in my region. You may have luck if you contact the program producers, like
posted on the PBSKids.org website
Sullivan Entertainment
110 Davenport Road

If I hear/read of anything, I'll post it.
In your character descriptions of some of the characters
Gilbert, Jem, Anne, Joy etc.), you mention that Jem and Faith Meredith
married and had a son and the Gilbert;s mother was present for the
birth of the twins. I don't think I have ever read this, and wondered
in which book I could look to find this? Thank you
Their engagement and 'Walter Blythe' is mentioned in 'The Road to
Yesterday': "The
Pot and the Kettle" and "A Commanplace Woman". Walter should be their son because
Jem and Faith were definitley engaged and the only other male sibling in the
family, Shirley, wasn't engaged to anyone.
Do you think there should be a Anne 4 movie?
I wouldn't mind seeing how the Anne 3 storyline continues. Who knows?
Maybe Anne will have the children she was meant to have, except at a
later age. Or maybe instead of Rilla helping out in World War I, she'll
be in World War II, not to mention it's her son who actually participates
in the WWII! I really have no idea how they would continue to stay true
to the series if they continue Anne 3. However, I think they will have
a way to do it. With that being said, I think they chances of another
Anne film from Sullivan Entertainment is quite unlikely. It's a real
hassle to get all the original actors starring in the movie again and
to please the fans another time.
Where is Anne's house of Dreams?
It was located at Four Winds. Anne says, "It's
the most beautiful harbor on the Island." (Chapter 1, Anne's
House of Dreams)
the bristish anne of avonlea comes out on dvd september
5 !! i found this out on the site critics choice
Yeah! I wish they would release the first one too. This is what I found out
from Koch
Vision, quoted from an earlier Anne FAQ I answered: "The sequel to
the BBC version of Anne of Green Gables (1972) Anne
of Avonlea (1975) will be released on
DVD August 6, 2006, but it is already available on VHS at Amazon."
why did anne not realize she loved gilbert all along?
Anne probably didn't want her relationship with Gilbert to go
anything beyond the friendship they already had. She was afraid they
would never feel the same about each other if they were together on
a romantic level; she was scared of losing that bond. That could explain
why she stuck so close to Roy Gardner, until she realized Gilbert was
'the one'. This quote is very evidentm, "Our friendship will
be spoiled if he goes on with this nonsense. It mustn't be spoiled--I
won't let it. Oh, WHY can't boys be just
sensible!" Chapter 1, Anne of the Island
I really like your site! I'm a lot like Anne in personality
and looks so I adore the 'Anne books'. I just finished the series,
ending
with "Rilla of Ingleside". The character of Walter has always
intruiged
me, as I also look for the beautiful and love poetry. I'm just
wondering if L.M.M. really did write Walter's poem "The Piper".
If she did
could you tell me more about it and where I could read it? Thank-you
very
much!
I believe L.M.Montgomery did write that poem, but the whole concept
of the 'Piper' coming is based on 'The
Pied Piper of Hamelin' by Robert
Browning. I think this may be the poem, but please tell me if it isn't
for I'm not certain:
The Piper
One day the piper came down the Glen...
Sweet and long and low played he!
The children followed from door to door,
No matter how those who loved might implore,
So wiling the song of his melody
As the song of a woodland rill.
Some day the Piper will come again
To pipe the sons of the maple tree!
You and I will follow from door to door,
Many of us will come back no more...
What matter that if Freedom still
Be the crown of each native hill?
since the continuing story is totally different from the series,
do you despise it?? do you disagree with the author of the continuing
story??
*Beware of spoilers*
I loved the first Anne film by Sullivan Entertainment and I thought the sequel
was very good too. I was so engrossed in the latter film that I didn't even realize
they had deviated from the series. I'm not a purist who demands all the Anne
films to be exactly derived from the books word for word. I don't mind minor
detail changes to the films for it sheds new light to the series you've never
imagined before, for example, it can offer a new perspective of a character from
the view of the director or the screenplay writer.
When I watched the third film for the first time, I had just finished reading Rilla
of Ingleside, one of my favourite Anne books in the series. I adore novels
set during the wars so when I found there was a third movie with all the same
actors and actresses that was recently released, I was ecstatic! I researched
on the film and was disappointed to learn it was entirely different from the
books. Although I knew it was the same characters, I was also aware that they
were just plucked from the series and placed into another story. I decided to
watch the film, just to see the storyline they'd chosen. I actually enjoyed the
film. There was suspense, a real sense of urgency for Anne, and love (although
I'm still skeptical about the possible relationship that could have blossomed
between Anne and the other character). Overall, it was a decent movie, especially
for television. For those who love war films, me being one of them, don't expect
full scale attacks and explosions, it isn't geared towards combat. I don't despise
the film at all, I think it's a good film. However, I think you have to sugarcoat
it a bit, forget this is supposed to be an Anne movie to appreciate it to its
entirety. Otherwise, you may find yourself quite disgruntled.
At the back of my mind I'm still wondering what if they had stuck to the plot?
I wanted to see Rilla and her Kenneth; the tingly excitement of first love, the
thoughtful Walter whose haunting poems and blue eyes pierce through even the
reader, Shirley who is rarely mentioned in the series, one of the first airmen
to fly in war, the always dutiful Susan etc. I have some possible theories why
the third film is so entirely different. Perhaps there isn't much to develop
in the last book. Rilla helps out with the war effort is essentially what she
does, a large step for Canadian women in history etc. maybe didn't seem too appealing.
Also, with the success of the first two films, maybe they wanted to take a big
risk, thinking the many fans of Anne and the films are big enough fanatics to
accept this version.
What happened to the twins, Davy and Dora? I know Davy got married
to Millie but what happened to Davy and did either die or have children?
Dora had a beau at age 17, Ralph Andrews (Jane Andrew's brother). Anne says, "I
remember him as a little, round, fat, white-headed fellow who was always at
the foot of his class. But I understand he is quite a fine-looking young man
now. Dora will probably marry young. She's of the same type as Charlotta the
Fourth--she'll never miss her first chance for fear she might not get another," in
Chapter 36, Anne's House of Dreams. In Chapter 27
of Anne of Ingleside, Susan says, "Lisette
positively cried because her cousin Dora's baby walked before Stella did?",
so she obviously had a child. I don't know if Davy had any children.
I LOVE this website and am quite taken with all the information
you have provided. It's wonderful. I've been a huge fan of the movies
since Anne of Green Gables (tv) came out 20 years ago and have all
three of the Megan Follows ones on DVD. I have two questions. First
- with all of the other Anne movies, where would it be possible to
get them? Also for the second movie, Anne of Avonlea (or, Anne of Green
Gables, the sequal) - what books is the plotline taken from? I've only
just read Green Gables & Avonlea for the first time this past week
and will start on Anne of the Island this week - but what books are
used for the second movie? Thanks! Annie in Indiana.
I'm glad you like the site! :D
The following are the films that are somewhat available:
1) The 1934 version starring 'Anne Shirley' is
available at Amazon (I
found copies at my local video store and library!).
2) The sequel to the 1934 film, Anne of Windy Poplars
(1940) was released by Tweakwood
Video on DVD in 2004 but I haven't located any of those available.
3) The sequel to the BBC version of Anne of Green
Gables (1972) Anne of Avonlea (1975) will
be released on
DVD August 6, 2006, but it is already available on VHS at Amazon.
4) The Akage no An (1979) series are available on
DVD for Region 2 and 3.
5) The three Anne movies by Sullivan Entertainment starring Megan Follows is
available on DVD and VHS at the Sullivan
Boutique.
Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987) is 'lightly'
based Anne of Avonlea, Anne
of the Island and Anne of Windy Poplars/Willows.
I think it's fun to compare the books and the film!
What happened to Phil? Did she have any kids?
Phil married a minister, who she calls 'Reverend Jo' Blake. She did have kids,
how many I'm not certain. Phil says, "Queen Anne, you're as queenly
as ever. I've got fearfully thin since the babies came. I'm not half so good-looking;
but I think Jo likes it. There's not such a contrast between us, you see," in
Chapter 3 of Anne's House of Dreams.
How many children did Diana have and what were their names?
Diana had three children that we know of in the Anne series. The
first is Fred who was two years older than Anne Cordelia. Anne Cordelia
was two years old in Anne's House of Dreams.
Jack is the youngest, two years younger than Anne Cordelia.
Do the first trilogy of books (Green Gables, Avonlea, House
of Dreams) actually indicate the timeline? If so, it seems irresponsible
of the writers of Continuing Story to ignore this.
L. M. Montgomery never outwardly stated each year the books take place in,
but simple mathematics can tell you what year the books take place in, by taking
note of the ages of the characters that Montgomery sometimes mentions. If Anne
was 11 years old in Anne of Green Gables (1876),
then she was born in 1865. She was 16 years old in Anne
of Avonlea, because this is stated in the beginning chapter. According
to her birth year, Anne would have been 49 years old in 1914, the beginning
of World War One. Anne already had all her children by Rilla
of Ingleside (Rilla was already 15 years old), so the scenario of her trudging
through Europe looking for Gilbert (who was in Avonlea in the series throughout
the entire book) and adopting Dominique during the Great War is totally out
of the blue.
How many children did Anne and Gilbert have? What were their
names? In what book(s) are they born?
Anne and Gilbert had a total of seven children: Joyce (Anne's
House of Dreams), James Matthew 'Jem' (Anne's House
of Dreams), Anne 'Nan' (in between Anne's House of
Dreams and Anne of Ingleside), Diana 'Di'
(in between Anne's House of Dreams and Anne
of Ingleside), Walter Cuthbert (in between Anne's
House of Dreams and Anne of Ingleside),
Shirley (in between Anne's House of Dreams and Anne
of Ingleside), Bertha Marilla 'Rilla' (Anne
of Ingleside).
What is Megan Follows doing at the moment?
Megan is taking part in the play "The
Real Thing" by Tom Stoppard and directed by Diana Leblanc in Toronto until
July 29.
you said that ms.lynde moved in and lived with Marilla in the
Green Gables... But in the movie, continuing story, diana and her children
and her husband were living in the GG..
Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story is a
complete other story from the Anne series. It's just the same characters
but put into a totally different plotline and timeline.
In the series, Anne reaches her 50s during the First World War, and she has
had seven children of her own. She did not go venturing out to Europe to look
for Gilbert, because Gilbert never enlisted as an Army doctor during the war,
much less sent out there! Anne's children were involved in the war however;
Jem, Walter and Shirley enlisted.
In the books, Fred Wright never enlisted, because he probably would have been
over the age limit, and the Wright family did not live in Green Gables because
Rachel Lynde did.
Green Gables was never bought by Diana for Anne, because there was no other
family that bought the house who left it in shambles.
In the film, Anne travels constantly. She's in New York, then Avonlea, then
trekking across Europe looking for Gilbert. Jack Garrison was not a character
in the books, thus his son Dominique was never adopted by Anne.
These are just a few inconsistensies in the film. To get the real story of
Anne, the series would be your best choice.
redmond
Anne went to study at Remond University (Dalhousie) in Halifax for her Bachelor
of Arts degree in Anne of the Island.
where did gilbert blythe go to college? was it queens for
first degree and kings for med school?
Gilbert went to Queens Academy (wins medal), attends Redmond College (graduates
with High Honours in Classics and Copper Prize). He then studies medicine at
the same college.
which one of the anne book do you like the best? (if the
first one is, the 2nd best) WHY?
I love Rilla of Ingleside, but I don't
consider it a real 'Anne' Anne book, neither is Rainbow
Valley in my opinion. The reason for this is because they focus shifts
so greatly from Anne to her children, although Anne is still a big character
in the books, it still is very far from the other books in the series like Anne
of the Island, Anne of Avonlea etc.
Back to Rilla of Ingleside, I thought
Rilla was slightly annoying at first, but following her sudden thrust into
harsh reality, the entire transformation, and all her own adventures drew me
into the series again. I'm also a real fanatic of novels set during the World
Wars, so this was a real bonus. Another book I really like in the series is Anne
of the Island, because there are so many characters in the books that Anne
befriends, all with their distinctive mannerisms. Also, Roy Gardner was very
charming but I was rooting for Anne to pick Gilbert all the way! I'm glad she
made the right choice. Otherwise, there would be no Rilla
of Ingleside :p
What was the purpose of putting Jack Garrison as a love interest
for Anne when she was already married to Gilbert & I was watching
a
commercial for the continuing story or Anne 3 when I saw scene of Jack& Anne
kissing I was totally disgusted (me being a Gilbert fan through and through!)
but later as I watched the movie the scene was n't there
do
you have an idea why. I hated the Anne 3 movie as an Anne of Green
Gables movie but I did enjoy it on it's own it was a good movie. I watched
the movie before I read the books and I was unhappy with it's
representation of Anne so I read the books.
I was quite surprised at how quickly Anne took to Jack Garrison, I guess
he was put in just to complicate matters a bit. I haven't seen the
commercial of them kissing, but I'd be disgusted too.
Though the movies are good, I still think the books are the best
way to follow the story.
What did Ruby Gillis die from?
Rachel Lynde says, "Ruby Gillis is dying of galloping consumption...[s]he
hasn't been able to teach since she had that attack of congestion in
the winter...[s]he'll be in her grave, poor girl..." in Chapter
11 of Anne of the Island.
Consumption is a progressive wasting of body tissue (pulmonary tuberculosis).
The term is no longer in use. Congestion is the accumulation of excessive
blood or tissue fluid in a vessel or an organ. Ruby caught the illness
when she went to Boston.
how did she die
The series end when Anne is 54 years old and she wasn't ill or near death. There
is no indication of when or how she dies.
do you hate continuing story, since... it's not the "truth" and
not by LMM???
See my last response.
I read here that the first translation into Spanish was made in
1962 but it's impossible bc I have an Spanish version of AoA from 1951
and one pf AGG from 1952.
The information is taken directly from The
Lucy Maud Montgomery Album by Kevin McCabe and Alexandra Heilbron. Either
there is a misprint or the author is merely pointing out when a widely distributed
Spanish copy of Anne was translated, and not necessarily the "first translation",
since this is never stated in the book.

Click to enlarge the image and see the information on the translation from the
book
(even if it's more about LMM than Anne...)
Did Lucy Maud Montgomery had any twins among her relatives?
I haven't found any information on her having twins in the family, but I'm still
searching. If I find any updates or if anyone knows, I'll post the update here.
What is the date that Matthew passes away in the Anne of Green Gables book??
Matthew dies after Anne wins the Avery Scholarship, when she was 16 years
old (1881).
What was the date that Anne Shirley arrived at Green Gables??
In around June of 1876, when she was 11 years old.
Who was Anne's best friend?
Anne made a lot of friends along the way but her bosom friend was Diana Barry,
so she was probably her best friend.
Who got Green Gables after Mathew and Marilla died?
Mrs. Rachel Lynde moved in with Marilla Cuthbert after Matthew and her husband
died. If Marilla passed away before Rachel, Rachel would probably keep living
in the house. There isn't anything in the books about the new owners of Green
Gables. Davy or Dora may buy it since they were still in Avonlea, who knows?
In the movie Gilbert suggests to Anne that she write about
real life. Does he also do this in the book?
No, that segment was created just for the movie.
What was Nan's real name?
Nan is named after Anne (Nan is a pet name and is not her full name or
actual spelling).
Do you have any information about the 1972 BBC mini series Anne of
Green Gables staring Kim Braden?
All the information about those series are on this page. If I receive any further information, it will be posted in the updates.
when did she die?
The books don't say when she dies. She is around 54 years old by the end
of Rilla of Ingleside in 1919.

Is Anne based on a true story?
The plot of the story
was based on a notebook entry of Lucy Maud Montgomery from 1904:
'Elderly
couple apply to orphan asylum for a boy. By mistake a girl is sent
them.' The rest of that scenario is unrelated
to the story of Anne. The character Anne Shirley and the world
of Anne are fictional.
Did Anne Shirley had any brothers and sisters?
No, she was an 'only child'.
Is Anne Shirley real?
No, she is a fictional character. Learn more about her here.
I have always wondered where the name 'Nan' came from when Anne
was naming her twins? All her other childrens names clearly come from
other characters in book. Do you know?
Anne named Nan after herself (Nan is a pet name and is not her full name or actual
spelling).

How old is Jonathan Crombie?
Jonathan is currently 39 years old (Oct. 12, 1966).
whats annes personality
Anne is very likable, her cheerfulness and compassion for others often
capture the hearts of those who loathe her.
In her earlier years, she was impulsive, imaginative and notorious for finding
herself in the most awkward situations. As she grew older, she became less clumsy,
and exuded a sort of sophistication and intelligence that only drew more people
to her, all the while still maintaining that spark of life and creativity. Click here to learn more about Anne Shirley.
When was Anne of Green Gables first released?
The book, Anne of Green Gables, was
first published in 1908.
love your site in the 1950's musical that appeared on cbc stared
barbra hamilton is she and relation to patrica hamilton who plays mrs
lynde
Barbara Hamilton was a Shop Assistant in Anne
of Green Gables (1956) (TV), was Marilla Cuthbert in both Anne
of Green Gables (1972)
and Anne of
Avonlea (1975), and was Eulalie Bugle in Road of Avonlea opposite
Patricia Hamilton as Rachel Lynde. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't
any relation between the both actresses.
in the television show road to avonlea what ever happend to
clemmie ray
Sorry, I don't know much about the tv series, Road to Avonlea. I've been watching
snippets of the show whenever I get the chance but I haven't watched it in about
a year so I'm very rusty. From researching the show, I could only find which
episode Clemmie first appeared in, and which one she is last notably mentioned
in. It's very difficult to find out which other specific episodes she was in
because she isn't such a notable character, although I'm sure she appeared
occassionally in the earlier seaons. She first appeared in Episode
2 of Season
1 and clearly in Episode
10 of Season 1 too. Perhaps fansites that specialize in the Road to Avonlea
tv series will be able to answer your questions much better :-)
Does Megan Follows really have that brilliant red hair as she
does in Anne of Green Gables and the Sequel? If not, what dye do u
rekon she used? Gorgeous color. Aslo, has the actor of Gilbert done
any other films? How old is he?
thanking you!
In her older photos, right before she played Anne, her hair colour had that same
kind of reddish-orangy tinge. Here is
a more recent photo of her in the theatre production 'Fool For Love' and her
hair is that colour. As for if she had further coloured her hair or highlighted
it for the Anne movies, I'm not certain.
Jonathan Crombie was the actor who played Gilbert.
This is his filmography and
he is currently 39 years old (Oct. 12, 1966).
Hey there, I was just thinking, you know in Anne of Green gables
- the unfortunate lily maid, how they are playing Elaine, hwat is that
from? is it a play? if so, where can i find it? And also, i adore the
clothing attire worn in all movies, is there many stores that would
sell such garments? Keep up the great work on this tremedous site!
Many thanks, Fiona Quigley, age 15.
Anne, Diana, Ruby, and Jane were re-enacting a scene from the poem, The
Lady of Shalott. It was written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, in which the body
of a character named Elaine is sent down a river in a barge.
In Timely
Fashion has a lot of information on the clothing worn in Anne
of Green Gables (1985). There are a lot of websites selling Victorian
vintage clothing. Just to name a few, Bustledress, Vintage
and Antique Clothing Links and Victorian
Links Marketplace.
Salut! This site is super! Do we ever find out when Anne's birthdate
is? What did Priscilla look like? What color eyes did Gilbert and Diana
Barry have? I hope these questions are not too difficult! Gros bisous,
ODETTE LEFÈBVRE
Bonjour! :-) Thank you kindly! We don't have the exact date but
it has been speculated that Anne's birth date was in March of 1865. You
can caculate the year by looking at when baby Joyce was born, in the year
1891. Gilbert and Anne were married a year before that, in 1890. They were
supposedly engaged three years before in 1887, and 1883 would have been
the year they started studying at Redmond. However, Anne began teaching
in the Avonlea schoolhourse in 1881,
and by looking at when Anne of Avonlea begins,
she is "half-past-sixteen". This means she was born in 1865.
Priscilla's first description is, "[...] the 'dream girl', Priscilla
Grant, she soon became intimate, finding the latter pale spiritual-looking maiden
to be full to the brim of mischief and pranks and fun," (Anne
of Green Gables, Chapter 35) and in Chapter 1 of Anne's
House of Dreams, "You should have seen the foreign missionary Priscilla
married. He was as handsome and inscrutable as those daydreams we once planned
to marry ourselves, Diana; he was the best dressed man I ever met, and he raved
over Priscilla's `ethereal, golden beauty.'"
Gilbert had hazel eyes, "Gilbert's hazel eyes was something that was
very good to see. Her heart gave a quick, queer little beat." (Anne
of Green Gables, Chapter 28). Diana has black eyes, "Diana
is a very pretty little girl. She has black eyes and hair and rosy cheeks." (Anne
of Green Gables, Chapter 8).
WOW! you have a nice site. I am looking forward to see a new
design you are working on now. I am regurarly coming to you to check
what is new. And there is always something interesting. I asked you
many questions about Anne in the past. Now I have another one: Was
LMM redheaded like Anne - her beat known character? Thank you again.
Thank you! =-) I'm excited about the new design as well. It will be similar
to this one in that it allows for easier and quicker navigation. The colours
will sure lighten up a cold winters day =-D
L.M.Montgomery had dark brown hair, "Miss Montgomery is short and
slight, indeed of a form almost childishly small, though graceful and symmetrical.
She has an oval face, with delicate aquiline features, bluish-grey eyes and
an abundance of dark brown hair. Her pretty pink evening gown somewhat accentuated
her frail and youthful aspect." The quotation is from Miss
L.M. Montgomery, Author of Anne of Green Gables of The Republic,
Saturday, November 19, 1910 issue where Lucy was interviewed about her books.
The link for that interview can be found through the
link to her life chronology between the years 1900-1920.

Hello, would you be so kind and explain to me what the Sloanishness
or Marilla´s and Mrs. Lynde´s statement means? Here is
their statement: "Charlie Sloane is wild about her, too, but I'd
never advise her to marry a Sloane. The Sloanes are good, honest, respectable
people, of course. But when all's said and done, they're SLOANES. Marilla
nodded. To an outsider, the statement that Sloanes were Sloanes might
not be very illuminating, but she understood. Every village has such
a family; good, honest, respectable people they may be, but SLOANES
they are and must ever remain, though they speak with the tongues of
men and angels."(AoI, ch.2)or "Sloanishness could be tolerated
only in fine weather"(AoI, ch.3). Thank you for your kindness.
Hi! Let us look at what the Sloanes do throughout the series. In Chapter 26
of Anne of Green Gables, "None
of the Sloanes would have any dealings with the Bells, because the Bells had
declared that the Sloanes had too much to do in the program, and the Sloanes
had retorted that the Bells were not capable of doing the little they had to
do properly." This means they were quite active people, who liked to see
tasks completed their way. In Chapter 30 of the same book, "Charlie Sloane
says he's going to go into politics and be a member of Parliament, but Mrs.
Lynde says he'll never succeed at that, because the Sloanes are all honest
people, and it's only rascals that get on in politics nowadays." That
quotation combined with the quote you quoted confirms that they were indeed
good people, respectable and known for their work around the community. As
to why they are apparently disliked may be contributed to their huge clan.
They're the kind of family you see at every corner you turn, and not just one
family member, but several together at once. Perhaps in the small community
of Avonlea, it was annoying to see them so regularly. They participated in
every activity, exuded the air of the perfect citizen, and from this quote,
could not be anything else but! "But then...there's any amount of Sloanes.
The Sloanes are still Sloanes, Anne, and will be for ever and ever, world without
end, amen." (Anne of Ingleside, Chapter
1). They are rigid and cannot change their ways -- their 'Sloanishness.' In
addition, they can be snobby and hypocritcal, just to uphold their family name.
When Anne had won the prize for her (and Diana's) story 'Averil's Atonement', "Josie
Pye said she believed Anne Shirley had just copied the story; she was sure
she remembered reading it in a paper years before. The Sloanes, who had found
out or guessed that Charlie had been "turned down," said they didn't
think it was much to be proud of; almost any one could have done it, if she
tried" (Anne of the Island, Chapter
16).
Hello there! Do you know if they are ever going to make any
more Anne movies? And also, i've heard of this Book called Anne's Christmas
or Akin to Anne or something, and was wondering, have u read it and
what's it about?
Okey thanks heaps! love Fiona Watson, Aus.
Hello, there were some weird rumours of a possible fourth Anne movie from Sullivan
Entertainment very recently (that's why I created the topic of last month's
poll), but I doubt it. Unless they find a new way to approach the story line
or continue with what they've created, or perhaps another director/company
decides to take up the task, there are no new Anne movies in the making yet.
No, I haven't read the books. There is a book called Christmas
with Anne and Other Holiday Stories. It contains 14 short stories that
were published in magazines dating to the early 1900s. Among them are two scenarios
from Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Windy Poplars. One is the case with Matthew
buying Anne a new dress with puffed sleeves and the other being the "surprise
thawing" of Miss Katherine Brooks.
Akin
to Anne: Tales of Other Orphans is written by Lucy Maud Montgomery herself.
It contains 19 short stories about orphans like Anne (hence the title, akin;
having a similar quality or character). The stories take place on Prince Edward
Island and include two long-lost sisters finally reunited, an Egyptian doll
that becomes special for a little who's desperately wanting a friend, an emerging
artist etc. It really sounds like a wonderful read!
Hello again. I am coming to ask who died sooner Marilla or Mrs.
Lynde? Can you give me some references to the books where it is mentioned
directly or nondirectly? Thank you.
Hi, for Mrs. Lynde, her death is never directly mentioned in the Anne series.
The last time she is mentioned as being alive is in Rainbow
Valley, "Mrs. Rachel Lynde, who was spending the leisure of her old
age in knitting cotton-warp quilts against the day when Anne's daughters should
need a " setting-out," (Chapter 3). She last mention of her is in Rilla
of Ingleside, and that's just about her apple-leaf bedspread. The etexts
should confirm that.
Marilla's death on the other hand has been directly mentioned in the Anne series, "Aunt
Marilla had died before Rilla was old enough to know her very well," (Rilla
of Ingleside, Chapter 2). She was still alive in Rainbow
Valley, "Aunt Marilla was very good to them" (Chapter 3).
It's very difficult to determine who passed away first with these few pieces
of information. There are some mentionings of Mrs. Lynde in the Further Chronicles
of Avonlea but you would need to figure out when those random stories took
place in Avonlea. According to this gathered info, I would know that both of
them were alive in Rainbow Valley (May 1906). Nan and Di were around 11/12
years of age at the time of this book. Rilla would have been approximately
7 years of age throughout the course of the story (she's 15 at the start of
WWI, 1914). That means they were both alive at the time in the early 1900s.
Another bit that complicates this is Marilla being 85 in Rainbow
Valley (Chapter 2) meaning she was born around 1820 and 56 when Anne arrived
(1876), but in Anne of the Island, Chapter
22, it says, "Marilla felt that out of her sixty years she had lived only
the nine that had followed the advent of Anne", meaning she was 51 when
Anne arrived. This contradiction in the books makes it increasingly difficult.
Will Anne OF Windy Poplars ever come out on DVD
From what I gather, it would mean that Teakwood Video had released a DVD in
2004 as seen here (under
' distributors'). I do not know what else to make of that statement. However,
I have tried searching but I cannot find where it is available online. If
that information is incorrect or just interpreted incorrectly, then it would
be up to the film company whether or not they wish to release a DVD of the
film.
Were Anne and Gilbert still alive during Rilla of Ingleside
?
Yes, both Anne and Gilbert were very much alive throughout the entire book
:-)
do you now if the three last books are traduce in french
Traduce as in "to cause humiliation
or disgrace to by making malicious and false statements," Dictionary.com about
the French people? Or do you mean if they're translated into
French?
Yes, there are comments that are no longer acceptable today in the last three
books. I've checked them myself and there are slight references that may make
some people squirm in their seats (of course in Rilla
of Ingleside, the view changes a bit, as it deals with Britain and France
as allies in the First World War). If you want specific quotes for whatever
reason, you can use the 'Find on Page' function on etext pages (I recommend Gutenberg).
I'm sorry if I don't answer your question fully because I'm not sure what it
is you are asking. I'm sure those books are translated into French, but I can't
find French etexts online. Gutenberg is
apparently planning to make French etexts.
Hi!! I was just wondering, you've said like kissing and stuff
was very strict, and that wouldn't of been allowed in Anne's Time.
Did that change in Rilla's time, (Because Ken Ford kisses her) Thanks!!!
Yes, there was a tiny bit of change in moral conduct. In the Victorian era, "Ladies
shall never embrace and kiss when they meet in a public place." In the
Edwardian era (Rilla's time), similar conducts were enforced. It wasn't that
the rules were considerably more lenient, but it just occured more often. If
you watch some old videos of women sending off their soldiers in the Great War,
there is a bit of hugging and kissing in the sending off! Here is a neat site
I found on Courtship.
Hi
Just wanted to know if there were any books on sale by any other authors who've
attempted to write sequels to the Anne books? I like reading the fanfiction
so wanted to know if anyone had attempted a full book! Thanks, like the
site. Sarah, UK
I haven't found any full sequel books to the series,
but there are countless fanfictions written by aspiring authors and
fans all over the internet. A few sites to get you started are: FanFiction.Net, Anne
of Green Gables FanFic, Anne
of Green Gables Fan Fiction, Rosa
Cotton - Diana Blythe, The
Alpine Path :)
Hello, your page is very nice and informative. I have no question
but I would like to tell to Gabriel that on my page she can find some
pics scanned from my Anne books published in Slovakia in 1965 made
by Jozef Trepác. They show not only Anne or Diana or Marilla
but Roy Gardner, Priscilla, Davy and Dora, Mr. Harrison, Miss Lavendar,
Paul Irving or Philippa, too. Just look at them to see how imagination
of slovak illustrator worked in 1965 when there was not Sullivan movie
yet. http://www.webpark.cz/anaklet/aofgg/index.html Scroll
down to see a link !!! NEW !!! Petra from Slovakia.
I've never seen them before (of course ;D)! Those must be very
rare, thanks so much for sharing Petra :) I appreciate fans coming out
to help other fans when in further need. For those who want a direct
link, click here.
This really isn't a question but an observation. The tenant

SISTERS!!) and i LOVED jane austen, pride and prejudice, sense and
sensibility, MANSFIELD PARK (an absolute favourite with P & P)
emma, northanger abbey and lady susan i loved the regency period and
victorain times!! i reccommend victorian books ESPECIALLY wuthering
heights by emily bronte. that was near perfection.. anyway... sorry
for clogging the questions up... I love this site!!!! Laura
Yup, fixed! Indeed, the Bronte sisters also have written wonderful
books, a focus point in English literature as well. Thanks for noticing
and telling me ;)
hey, i'm Gabrielle and i have question i hope you can answer.
you know how on some site you can find drawn pics of anne, (example:ones
on this site's search engine) do you think anyone ever drew a picture
of what Philippa, Diana, or Stella looked like? if they did could you
plese show me? im sure everyone would be very interested. thanks heaps.
I looked for pictures of Philippa Gordon and Stella Maynard but I have come
up with nothing :( Akin to Anne has put up pictures from the Anne
of Green Gables Birthday Book, where Diana is depicted. I bought my copy
from Amazon and it's a lovely treasure for Anne fans to have. There's also
the Annotated
Anne of Green Gables, and it says it's full of pictures of Montgomery
and Anne so you'll probably find some pictures of Diana too.
if rilla andf ken ever had a baby what do u reckon they'd call
it? how old was anne when rilla was born, approximately? Opal from
Australia
They could name their child after their parents (Owen, Leslie, Anne, Gilbert),
as some people like to do, or any name that suits their tastes or the time
period. They could even name their baby after their siblings or themselves.
The possibilities are endless!
Anne was around 34 years old when she had Rilla in July 1899 if she was indeed
born in 1865.
i wish i lived in the anne days! everything was so sweet and
romantic and i hate my school. iwish montgomery was still alive to
write more book! do u no any books you could reccommend for an anne
fan? thatnx, love Felipa
Well, I'm sure some people would look back a hundred years later at us and
be envious too :D
If you haven't yet read the Chronicles of Avonlea and the Further
Chronicles of Avonlea, you should because it's partially related to Anne.
Anne does make a few appearances! Also notable is Emily of New Moon,
written by Montgomery as well (it's about an orphan too). Many Anne fans love Jane
Austen, and she's written books like Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense
and Sensibility; all which have been made into enjoyable films. Her works
are often studied in English literature and the period of the books are in
the Victorian era, but in actual history, it's more in the Regency era (around
1790s-1820).
hi there! my name is deanna douglas and i adore all the anne
books. i was wondering, what did you do if you liked someone back in
those days? did you just go out to dinner parties or things like that?
were u allowed to show affection, like kissing etc? and also, i signed
up for the 'anne of the isand fanlisting' bt what exactly do u do with
fanlisting? i thought it would give me extra info or something! who
is your fave anne character apart from anne herself? i loved roy gardnre
he was so sweet to anne. i bet he was really hot too. anyway thatx
for the site and pls answer the questions if you can! lu deanna
Depending on your age, if you were close to being an adult or was one, you
would attend dinner parties and do courting (men usually did this). The society
at the time was very strict and as you can probably tell from the Anne series,
there were very few instances of couples showing their affection in public
(actual kissing). Every motion was done before the parents, as any little action
could cause scandals or gossips for ever watching busybodies (like Mrs. Rachel
Lynde ;)
A fanlisting is a place where fans join to show their love for a certain person,
place or object. You don't have to do anything and it doesn't give you any
further information about that certain area, but it lists your name to show
that you are indeed a fan. That's all. If you have a site, you'd put a code
from the fanlisting on your site to show you're a fan of that subject.
I like Kenneth Ford, he seems real sweet and is a real dark, mysterious character
for me...plus, he's in military uniform :p
Hey this is actually a comment but in reply to the one of stella
maynard. she was first mentioned as he 'rose red' girl at Queens and
had dark hair and eyes who was very dreamy. she carried out the best
looking award at Queens ahead of anne. i hope that helps the Stella
Fan
"Stella Maynard carried off the palm for beauty, with small but
critical minority in favor of Anne Shirley," Chapter 35, Anne
of Green Gables, the critical minority means Anne is the one who 'carries
off the palm for beauty", although she has only a tiny lead in her
favour.
Do we know if anything happened to Persis Ford? How old was
she? I really love your site- its additctive!
Thanks!
Persis Ford is first mentioned in Anne of Ingleside and had honey-tinted curls,
but there isn't much about her within the Anne series, especially Rilla
of Ingleside, so it's hard to tell what happened to her. She may be mentioned
in other books besides the Anne novels, but I've also looked in Chronicles
of Avonlea and Further Chronicles of Avonlea and have come up with
nothing.
Do we know anything else about rilla after Ingleside? Is it
sure she and Ken Ford got married?
No, there isn't another book about Rilla or Kenneth. Their future is left to
the reader (which I do think they married, after all, they both stayed in love
for four years)!
Hello, first of all I must say I love your site. Every time
I return to you I enjoy my visit. Here is my question: Why did not
appear relationship between Anne and Roy Gardner (mentioned in Anne
of the Island) in Sullivan's films? There was missing the whole period
of Anne's life in Redmond. It is a pity because I would like to see
our Anne with Stella, Pris and Philipa and of course aunt Jimsie at
Patty's Place. And Roy was Anne's man of dreams! His eyes, his voice!
So romantic! Today I am a graduated student myself. So "this chapter
of my life" I can compare with Anne in book and again and again
dream about it. But I am so curious about how Patty's Place and Roy
and Anne's friends look like if these turned to film! Both Patty's
Place and Roy made such an impression on Anne. I know there was Queen's
college turned to film and Summerside school but that time is Anne
student not anymore because she is teacher. Thanks a lot for answer.
Petra from Slovakia.
Thanks, glad you like the site!
I have no idea why Sullivan decided to focus so much on that romance between
Anne and Captain Pringle! I have an image of Roy Gardner plastered in my mind
too :D I would think Sullivan omitted all the other characters because he wanted
to show Anne was growing up as a hopeless romantic and Captain Pringle seemed
to be the ideal man in her eyes. Odd, but this is what it says at Anne3.com.
you are pretty cool for keeping this site up and running. i
visited loads and this is by far the best. how old were you when you
first read the anne books? i am twelve but my sister still loves them
and she is 14 1/2. what do you rekon ever happened to the other girls
in anne # 3 (book)? for example philippa, and stella and pris and roys
sister Doroty? Montgomery should have mentioned them again because
i loved them! what names were popular in the victorian era or could
you refer a site? thanks again, you rock. from Brooke MacKye
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying your visits! I was seven
when I first read Anne of Green Gables.
Well, we know Stella went on to teach in Vancouver, Philippa would have married
Jo and Dorothy probably would have turned out to be a quite lady in the end.
Here's a site with
popular Victorian names.
what is the best book you have evr read? mine is anne of the
island but i and im sure many before me would have found it more interesting
if L.M had described the kissind/chemistry between characters. also
if she described the lovemaking in anne's house of dreams, even the
pregnancy! all that happened was oe chapter we found she had tooken
ill and before you know it, boom! baby rilla is here! she should have
described the sexual actrivity, not so it was disgusting, just vague
references to the pleasure/pain or excitement. dont you agree? more
people would have read them i fell sure, but of course this would be
the adults version. maybe you would like to write an extended chapter
and publish it on this site. please think abut it. if you must change
the names slightly as not to copyright.
That's an interesting idea, though I'm not an expert on romance books. Nonetheless,
I'll think about fan fiction. Of course, keep in mind Montgomery was writing
these books for children. She has several novels written for adults, but women
writers weren't as highly regarded back then and adult topics were unacceptable.
What about priscilla grant? did she ever get married and why
did anne not seem to keep in touch with her, Stellla, Phil?
Priscilla Grant married a foreign missionary, "You should have seen
the foreign missionary Priscilla married. He was as handsome and inscrutable
as those daydreams we once planned to marry ourselves, Diana; he was the best
dressed man I ever met, and he raved over Priscilla's `ethereal, golden beauty.'
But of course there are no cannibals in Japan," Chapter 1, Anne's
House of Dreams.
I think Mongtomery wanted to leave the secondary characters out in her later
books. I'm sure Anne would have kept in touch with her friends but the focus
shifted to her children, especially in those last two books.
Did Stella Maynard ever have a beau and or get married? i remember
that she was supposedly quite attractive, but can you tell me exactly
what she looked like? thanks.
p.s. i really think they should have put Philippa Gordon and some other important
characters from Anne #3 in the second movie. it would have
made it SO much more watchable!
Stella Maynard was first mentioned in Anne
of Green Gables as having attended Queens' Academy and was a teacher in Anne
of the Island. There isn't much on her appearance, but it's notable that
she was quite poor, often looked up to Anne, and wasn't always too cheerful, ""I'm
blue and discouraged myself," said Stella, throwing herself on the couch. "Nothing
seems worthwhile. My very thoughts are old. I've thought them all before. What
is the use of living after all, Anne?", Chapter 35, Anne
of the Island. She later went to teach in Vancouver, (British Columbia
I presume).
It would have been lovely to see more characters incorporated into Anne 3,
but it's what it is :/
Was Rilla prettier than anne? indeed was she pretty at all?
what would she have been rated (1-10) nowadays? what about una? thanks
for the site! love Celia Capkin, Victoria, Australia.
I'd say both are pretty in their own rights. Rilla was indeed beautiful; her
creamy, smooth skin, long lashes and tiny dimple above her upper lip made her
irresistible! She was also quite tall and curvy, and I think she would hold
a 10 in today's standards.
Una reminded Mr. Meredith of his wife/her mother. She had silky black hair
and expressive blue eyes.
is PEI as beautiful as it is on the movie? did they even film
it there? where is Kingsport i just red anne of the island? ur bigget
fan xoxo
I've never been to Prince Edward Island, but it certainly seems very picturesque
and beautiful there! If you're referring to Anne of
Green Gables (1985) (TV), parts of it were filmed in Prince Edward Island,
but the rest (including Green Gables) was in Uxbridge, Ontario.
Kingsport is in Nova Scotia.
When were Nan and Di born, and did either of them ever get married?
Nan and Di were born in 1894/5. The series stop at Rilla
of Ingleside and they didn't marry in the book.
I read somewhere there was some books called Chronicles of avonlea,
and Further Chronicles etc. do you know what they are about?
Yes, Chronicles of Avonlea and The Further Chronicles of Avonlea are
a collection of short stories about the Avonlea's other inhabitants besides
the Anne, Diana, Gilbert etc. They sometimes feature and/or mention Anne but
for the most part, they focus on other personalities (ie. Ludovic Speed, Old
Man Shaw).
Why do you think Anne 3 was so different from the books? I know
they condensed many of the Anne books for Anne 2, but why on earth
did they go so far off track? And was the third Anne a success? Or
were other fans as dissapointed as I was?
It's quite interesting really; Sullivan originally planned to base this film
on Rilla of Ingleside (I would have personally loved this, to see what Anne's
children looked like and especially Kenneth Ford! <3). Although, this was
not what happened. Sullivan's explanation is: "In Montgomery’s
later books, Anne’s children went off to war, but most people haven’t
read those books and in the world of Avonlea, we wanted to keep our world in
sync. In the miniseries, Anne and Gilbert Blythe are in their early twenties
at the time of World War I, so a natural question – what if Anne and
Gilbert went to war? – led to a completely original story. It started
with, ‘Did Anne and Gilbert get married, and how?’ but their lives
became caught up in other, much larger events." He probably is trying
to say that because most readers haven't read as far to Rilla
of Ingleside, he feels it was best to leave out the books before (ie. Rainbow
Valley) because it discussed her children. Instead of going through
the process of touching upon those books and her children, he decided to ditch
the idea of Anne and Gilbert starting a family and took the turn of continuing
where he left off in Anne: The Sequel, with Anne and Gilbert
still single and unengaged. There he continued with their story, according
to what he thought was an alternate path to the story told by Montgomery.
The film didn't receive all dismal reviews, the Daily Variety Gotham said, “Sullivan
and company have been faithful to the books’ original turn-of-the-century
spirit.” I know of many Anne fans who dislike this film, but I'm
sure there are some who still enjoy the timeless story of Anne (or what's become
of it). I can't honestly say this is my favourite Anne movie, but I watch it
as a historical piece about Canada's involvement in the Great War, and appreciate
that aspect of it. It's hard to think Anne would adopt a child instead of what's
supposed to be seven children, and her going for Mr. Garrison eh? You're not
the only one who's baffled! @_@
do you think they will ever make a remake of the 'anne' movies?
i would so love it! not that the old ones are bad but wouldnt it be
fun to act in them? i would especially love to portray a character
in 'anne of the island,' which book is you fav?
It's not impossible, it could happen. I don't think it would happen anytime
soon in Canada, because there are so few thriving Canadian production companies
willing to produce that many films on Montgomery's books. Sullivan Entertainment
is a rare case, with so many films set in Victorian Canada and based on Montgomery's
books.
My favourite book is Rilla of Ingleside; it was one of those books that I fell
in love with after I read it :D
did colleen dewhurst die?
Yes, she had
cervical cancer.
was the character anne shirley based on anyone in real life?
There was no specific person, but Montgomery used her own childhood experiences
in Prince Edward Island for the Anne series. Some find similarities in that
she often felt lonely as a young girl, and an experience she had as a young
girl with her relatives, the Macneills (they sent for an orphaned boy of
ten-twelve years of age but received a three-year-old girl instead). A few
other of Montgomery's characters were orphans as well.
i have only just read the Anne books and my friend said this site
was good if i didnt understand something. how long have you been studying
the anne books exactly? and do you yhink that gil and christine ever
made love? like when he was depressed or something|? thanks for this
fab site!
I haven't been thoroughly analyzing each Anne book, but I've been running this
site for almost two years, so I guess you could say that's the length of time
I've thrown myself deeply into these books! I have always been interested in
the Victorian era so I incorporate my knowledge in that area with the Anne
series when answering questions :)
No, Gilbert would have had a proper upbringing (I'm sure you know how strict
the Victorians were). An unmarried couple would never be in the same bedroom
anytime of day without being under the watchful eyes of adults. The two would
never live down the shame and disgrace.
which book did gil and anne make love for the first time in?
Their first child died, Joyce, as an infant in Anne's House of Dreams. That's
also the book they were married in. Don't be fooled by Anne of Green Gables:
The Continuing Story (1999) (TV) if you saw the deleted DVD scene; the movie
is unfortunately not based on the books (unlike the other two films before
this last one).
Frst of all I would like to congratulate you on this site. it is
marvellous. i was wondering, did Anne's daughter Di, ever have a beau?
and what of Shirley, did he ever have a girlfriend? i hope you van
answer my questions.
Thank you, I hope you're enjoying your visit!
I presume you're referring to the their status in Rilla of Ingleside? Di did
have a beau, or beaux rather! "She knew that Rilla longed to be "out" to
go to parties as Nan and Di did, and to have dainty evening dresses andbeaux!" Chapter
2, Rilla of Ingleside. As for Shirley, there is little said about his private
life. He walked with Una Meredith once, but Una had her heart set on Walter.
He later went out to the front too, so there's even less information.
Did Anne wear makeup or was she naturally pretty?
Women had chatelaines in the Victorian Era. They were hung around their waists
(like a belt) and consisted of tiny scissors, sewing needles, thread etc.
It wasn't until later that these chatelaines were used for holding make up,
and even though it was used for that purpose, the usage of make up among
women was looked down greatly upon. Anne would not have used make up, especially
in her earlier years. It was in the 1920s when women started to put on lipstick
in public, and that infuriated many people. Since the series ended post-The
Great War, so it's even more unlikely. Also given the fact Anne had a special
charm about her, I think her naturalness must had been associated to that
as well.
Did Anne and Roy ever kiss?
They did seem rather close in the book, though I feel Anne didn't devote her
heart entirely to him. Even towards the end, Anne still had feelings for
Gil, and given this took place during the Victorian Era, if they did kiss,
it would have been rather secretive, and even if they did, Anne wouldn't
have thoroughly enjoyed it as much as her time with Gilbert. Overall, Anne
is an adventurous girl, but I don't think she would have jumped to kissing
him until she was absolutely sure of it, as seen when she seriously contemplated
on whether or not she would marry him.
did Phil ever flirt with Gilbert
She wanted his attention very badly so she might have, but since she had Alec,
Alonzo and Jo, she could have been pretty occupied. Anne said in Anne
of the Island, "Now, when Phil talks of her beaux it sounds
as if she was just speaking of chums. She really looks upon boys as good
comrades, and she is pleased when she has dozens of them tagging round, simply
because she likes to be popular and to be thought popular," and
Phillipa also said, "But, of course, the one I like best I can't
get. Gilbert Blythe won't take any notice of me, except to look at me as
if I were a nice little kitten he'd like to pat. Too well I know the reason," -
Gil only had eyes for Anne.
what ever happened to Roy Gardner?
He must have been crushed after Anne left him, especially those two years when
she thought she loved him but dumped him at the last minute. I assume he may
have moved on and charmed someone else or had another lady fall for him.
what is anne's middle name?
I'm sure you recall Anne wanting to be called Cordelia, and then grumply Anne
with an 'E' when she was first introduced to Marilla. There is however, no indication
she had a middle name.
What are Anne's personality traits?
We see Anne mature throughout the series, from a vivacious young girl with
flaming red hair and freckles to an admirable, serene woman with flowing
auburn
hair. However you look at her character, Anne undoubtedly starts off as
a tenacious, clumsy yet eager chatterbox, who then turns into a spirited youth,
and
finally a tactful, cherished woman. Despite her age, Anne maintains her
unrelenting humour, and provides comfort to those around her.
did anne marry in real life
I'm assuming you're asking about the actress who
portrayed Anne in the Sullivan Entertainment renditions? According to imdb.com,
Megan was married to Mr. Christopher Porter from April 27, 1991 - 1995. They
have 2 children together and Megan is reportedly raising her children with partner,
Mr. Stuart Hughes.
did gilbert marry in real life
I'm assuming you're asking about the actor who portrayed
Gilbert in the Sullivan Entertainment renditions? I did a bit of research and
up-to-date info on Jon is very hard to find. It seems that he isn't married.
If anyone has any additional info, feel free to submit
them!
What is she most known for?
Anne is most known for her strong-will,
flaming red hair and matching temper (her trademarks). All three components
made her an irresistable character, and even more so when brought to life by
Montgomery.
When was your birthday?
My birthday? Sorry, I don't let personal information
out. I can say that Anne's birthday is speculated to be around 1865. Her birthdate
was never stated in any of the books so it's just an educated guess based
on the time the books were written.
I was wondering if the actor\'s and actress\'s that have done the movies
are still acting cause you never hear much about Jonathan Crombie or other people
i mean i know Colleen Dewhurt died but i was really wondering about Jonathan
Crombie cause it is a mystery !
I do know that Megan Follows is still making
movies. The Stork Derby has aired on Bravo and The Chase was recently
broadcasted on A&E. As for Jonathan Crombie, he hasn't signed on to another
film since Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story; the same goes for Schuyler
Grant. I'm thinking he's doing some theatre work or taking a rest :/ No worries
though, if he wants to continue acting, I'm sure there are various opportunities
for him :-) Check imdb.com for updates on the
actors and actresses of the Anne films.
When does Marilla die?
Marilla supposedly dies in the last few books
in the series but the author does not specify when. She just mentions 'after
Marilla's death' and there is no funeral or visit back to Green Gables for
that reason.
Which book do Gil and Anne get married in?
Gil and Anne get married in Anne's House of Dreams
