• Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) •

Montgomery was one of the very first successful, Canadian or not, and accepted women authors. Her impact on Canadian history is undeniable, whether it's the timeless quality of her works, the effortlessly descriptive passages of scenes that may no longer exist in our world today, the attractive characters she creates in her palettes or her memorable accounts of Canadian women in the First World War, Montgomery has inspired readers and writers alike throughout the world.

Montgomery wrote several collections of stories and two books particularly for adults. Her other series characters include Emily, who appeared in three novels, and Pat, who was in two novels. At her death, she left behind 10 volumes of unpublished personal diaries (1889-1942), in which publication began in 1985. Montgomery's heroines are frequently motherless, but adventurous, imaginative and determined. Among the most famous orphans in her novels is Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series.
