July 11th, 2010 July Calendar Here!

I’m back and so are the monthly updates!  In the June monthly poll, the question was, “Which actress best portrayed Anne Shirley?”  The winner (18-1) was unanimously “Megan Follows in the 1985/1987/2000 versions” to “Dawn O’Day (stage name: Anne Shirley) in the 1934/1940 versions”.  The new monthly poll is posted to the left (just scroll down) and you can also click here.

The July calendar is also here, featuring Anne Shirley with Diana Barry and Gilbert Blythe:

I’ve answered some Anne FAQs:

where did anne go to school
Anne Shirley attended Avonlea School (later becoming its schoolmarm), Queen’s Academy, and then Redmond College in Nova Scotia.

in which chaper of anne’s house of dreams does anne find out she is pregnant with her eldest child?
I believe it is right at the beginning at Chapter 11 during this conversation with Miss Cornelia:
“Yes, the eighth baby arrived a fortnight ago,” said Miss Cornelia, from a rocker before the fire of the little house one chilly October afternoon. “It’s a girl. Fred was ranting mad—said he wanted a boy—when the truth is he didn’t want it at all. If it had been a boy he’d have ranted because it wasn’t a girl. They had four girls and three boys before, so I can’t see that it made much difference what this one was, but of course he’d have to be cantankerous, just like a man. The baby is real pretty, dressed up in its nice little clothes. It has black eyes and the dearest, tiny hands.”
“I must go and see it. I just love babies,” said Anne, smiling to herself over a thought too dear and sacred to be put into words.
The dear and sacred “thought” that Montgomery refers to is a hint to me that Anne already knows she is pregnant. If anyone reads any other hints before Chapter 11, feel free to leave a comment.

The last month’s poll question was, ““Do you have a bosom friend like Anne and Diana Barry?” The results were very close!  The winner won by just two votes, (12-10) “Yes” to “No”.  I suppose some people may have several bosom friends and/or they are not like Diana Barry.  The next poll will be up until the end of June.  You can vote here or in the left navigation bar.

As mentioned in April, I answered several Anne FAQs.
are they going to make more anne movies
I have not heard of any new Anne movies being made. Have you watched the most recent one? It is called Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning (2008). This is the link to the official website.

are they going to make anne of the island
I have not heard of any news about a new film on Anne of the Island. However, the 1987 version of Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel is based on Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, and Anne of Windy Poplars.

where to watch anne of green gables tagalog tv series
Are you referring to the 1985/1987/2000/2009 series? Sorry, I could not find any of those offered in Tagalog. They are offered in English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, and Finnish.

Do you know what happened to the original two orphans who inspired “Anne of Green Gables”?  On another note, while surfing for ‘Anne’, I found these ‘maps’ of Avonlea, if you’d like to take a look:  http://home.clara.net/hendricks/kindreds/avonlea.html
Regards, Nina

Sorry, I don’t know what happened to the two orphans,  other than the couple who received them intended to find out how the mix-up happened. Thanks a lot for the link Nina! It’s definitely useful to have a visual interpretation of where all these places existed as some are fictional.

Do you know the pronunciation of Phillipa’s name? Is it Phil e puh?
I would pronounce it in the way you’ve written it, or alternately spelled on Wikipedia: FIL-i-pa.

This is personal question instead of an inquiry about Anne. Which is your favorite Anne book and your least favorite, and why on each. If you’ve read other books by L.M.M. which is your favorite and why. Thanks!
My favourite book in the series would have to be a tie between Anne of Green Gables (1908) and Rilla of Ingleside (1920). For Anne of Green Gables (1908), I love the book notbecause it is arguably the most famous one in the series, but for the reason that it is the first instance you meet Anne. She is a lonely orphan, never having experienced a sense of belonging or care from anyone up until her arrival at Green Gables. Initially she seeks comfort from her world in her wide “scope for imagination”, but then she continues her imaginations for another reason, as she is in awe and inspired by her new surroundings. I read Anne of Green Gables (1908) when I was 13, so I was able to relate to her experiences of growing up, possessing a limitless imagination, and the development of relationships with family and friends.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Rilla of Ingleside (1920) because it contrasted so greatly with the other books in the series. The focus is on Rilla Blythe, Anne’s youngest child. I was the same age as Rilla when I read the book, so again, I could relate to her feelings of clumsiness and self discovery. I have an interest in studying the World Wars, so reading Montgomery’s interpretations of a Canadian family living through the uncertainty and horrors of the times provided an authentic perspective. I am not sure how much of Montgomery’s experiences during the First World War were portrayed through this book. Also, I felt that the book was a perfect ending to the series because the focus had shifted to the next generation, as it had began to in Rainbow Valley (1919).
For my least favourite book, I would have to say it is Rainbow Valley (1919). It was a shock to go from Anne of Ingleside (1939), where Anne was still a major character, to a book focused mainly on the  Blythe and Meredith children. I had no interest in what the children did because I had already outgrown their age and could not relate to them. I was accustomed to this fact when I read Rilla of Ingleside (1920), so it did not bother me as much.

Please can you tell me where I can get all the Anne stories on video or dvd, I have A-o-g-gables, the trilogy, R t Avonlea, & all the series just want the early ones, vicki
Depending on where you live, your local library may have some of these films available.
The earliest Anne of Green Gables (1919) film starring Mary Miles Minter is suspected to be lost forever. The second Anne of Green Gables (1934) film starring Anne Shirley (aka Dawn O’Day) is available on Amazon. The same actress starred in Anne of Windy Poplars (1940), a sequel filmed six years later. I’ve never watched this one before. Teakwood Video apparently released a DVD of the movie in 2004 but no one seems to have seen them in DVD stores yet. Some people were able to write and contact the company, but this was 3 years ago. I could not locate the 1956 and 1972 (lost) versions of the film, but Anne of Avonlea (1975) produced by BBC as a sequel to the 1972 version is available here. Akage No An (1979) is in Japanese and there are 50 episodes in total. You can find them here but they are only available in Regions 2 and 3.

Have an Anne-related question?  Feel free to ask!

I have a lot more Anne FAQs in my inbox still, even some from up to half a year ago! Stick around as I will answer them within the next couple of weeks.

April 1st, 2010 Updates are back!!!

Yes, I actually have the updates ready for April after three months of hiatus :)  No, this is not an April Fool’s Day joke!

The last poll’s question was, “How many times have you read Anne of Green Gables?”  It appears that you have all read it many times because 19 people voted “10+ times”, while in second place was “1-3 times” with 10 votes.  “4-6″ times received 7 votes and “7-9″ times received only 1 vote.  I’ve read it only 5 times, so I  really need to catch up this summer.  I wonder if there would be the same trend for Anne of Avonlea, all the way to Rilla of Ingleside?  You can vote in the new monthly poll here or on the left side after you scroll down a bit.

I want to thank everyone who has been checking back on this website and for sending encouraging comments and emails :) I have around seven Anne FAQs that I’m getting ready (including one from October). I keep all the emailed FAQs so don’t be alarmed if you do not see your answers posted yet. I should be able to get around posting them after my finals at the end of this month. Please stay tuned!
